Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is a technique utilized in a laboratory to produce many copies of DNA. Where serologic testing can indicate exposure to an organism by detecting antibody levels, PCR can detect the presence or absence of a pathogenic organism in a clinical specimen. At the Imugen laboratory, PCR is utilized to detect the DNA of the Borrelia genus (including Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia miyamotoi), Babesia microti, Anaplasma phagocytophilium, and Ehrlichia chaffeensis.
